[Excerpts from Things I Remember About My Mother - Maude Stevens DeBord]
Sarah worked in the tobacco fields with her father who was a tobacco farmer in
the mountains of Virginia. He was also a cooper and made barrels with a trademark
of three palm branches. Sarah used this design for cutting steam vents in the
top crust of pies she made. Her mother died when she was sixteen, leaving her
the care of two brothers and four sisters.
Her father's family was English with the surname of Lee. Since he owned many
oxen, he was called Ox-Lee which became Oxley. Her mother's people were Pennasylvania
Dutch slave holders named Goode. As a small child, she was cared for by a negro
slave named Aunt Chloe.
After marrying Elias Neighbors in 1865, they moved (along with her father and
four sisters) to Wabash, Indiana. Her first child, Will, was born in Indiana.
After three years, they moved (again by covered wagon) to Ottawa, Kansas.
Her father had moved to Texas County, Missouri and after one year in Kansas,
she and Elias also moved there to homestead government land. Sarah lived in the
home they built there for the rest of her life. The closest towns were Marshall
to to the West and Rolla to the East.
Her husband, Elias, died in 1879 leaving her with seven children. The oldest,
Will, was thirteen. Her father also died and her four sisters moved in with
her.
In 1881, she married Stephen M. Stevens, a widower with four sons and a young
daughter, Ann, who remained with relatives in Iowa. Stephen was a miller who
had built his own mill on Piney River. He gave up his mill after their marriage
and moved to Sarah's farm. He then did carpenter and mill work about the countryside.
He built Sarah a new house and barn on the farm. He quarried the stone for
the barn from a site on the farm.
Stephen's son, Hobart and, daughter Ann came to live with them on the farm.
Ann later married her step-brother, Will. Stephen and Sarah had three children
of their own. This made a family of twelve children in the home besides the
three stepsons who were in and out.

was productive of more good. We all gained much knowledge of Bible truths. It

searching the Scriptures to see if these things are so.
